Support for Muslim Families in Funeral and Burial Practices

In Islam, death is viewed as a natural and significant transition, and it is accompanied by specific religious and cultural practices. These traditions provide a way for the family and community to honor the deceased and ensure they are laid to rest according to Islamic beliefs.

Key Practices for Muslim Funerals

  • Washing the Body (Ghusl): The body is ritually washed by family members or community members of the same gender. This purification process, called Ghusl, is performed in a specific order and is vital for preparing the deceased for burial.
  • Shrouding the Body (Kafan): The deceased is wrapped in a simple white shroud, symbolizing humility and equality in death. For men, three shrouds are used, while five are used for women.
  • Quick Burial: Islamic practice mandates burial within 24 hours of death to ensure the natural return of the body to the earth.
  • No Cremation: Cremation is strictly prohibited in Islam. The body is placed directly in the earth, in a shroud, without a casket. This reflects the belief in bodily resurrection on the Day of Judgment.
  • Funeral Prayers (Salat al-Janazah): A prayer for the deceased is recited by the community, asking for Allah’s mercy and peace for the departed soul.

Important Considerations

Because the burial process is swift, it is essential to avoid delays in paperwork. The death certificate should be completed as quickly as possible, and the discharge procedures and release of the body must be expedited. This ensures that families can proceed with the burial in accordance with Islamic law.
